What is a book cover template / book cover dieline?
A book cover template (also called a book cover dieline, cover wrap, cover spread or cover layout) is a vector guide that lays out the back cover, spine and front cover as one continuous flat sheet — exactly how it prints before it is folded and bound. This generator builds print-ready book cover files with a red cuts outline, green creases for the spine folds, and optional bleed and safe-margin guides so your artwork lines up perfectly with the trim.
Which cover types can I make — paperback, hardcover or dust jacket?
All three. Paperback / softcover full-cover is a single spread (back + spine + front) with two spine fold creases. Hardcover case wrap adds a turn-in / wrap allowance around every edge plus hinge (joint) score lines beside the spine, so the printed sheet wraps around the boards. Dust jacket adds front and back flaps with fold creases. Switch between them with the Cover type selector — the dieline, folds and labels update automatically.
How do I calculate the spine width?
Spine width depends on your page count and paper thickness (caliper / PPI). Use the built-in spine width calculator: spine = page count × thickness per page. As a guide, white offset paper is about 0.0032 in (0.0813 mm) per page, cream/uncoated about 0.0037 in, and standard print-on-demand paper about 0.0025 in. Always confirm the exact spine width with your printer or your KDP / IngramSpark cover calculator before finalising.
What are the standard book trim sizes?
The most common trim sizes are US Trade 6 × 9 in, Digest 5.5 × 8.5 in, Novella 5 × 8 in and pocket / mass-market 4.25 × 6.87 in. Non-fiction and workbooks often use 8.5 × 11 in, while comics use 6.625 × 10.25 in. Metric standards include A5 (148 × 210 mm), A4, B5, Royal and Demy. Presets for all of these are built in, and you can enter any custom size in inches, millimeters or pixels.
How much bleed and safe margin does a book cover need?
Most book printers, including KDP and IngramSpark, require 0.125 in (3 mm) bleed around the whole cover spread and keep important text and logos at least 0.125–0.25 in inside the trim (the safe margin).
